HCL Permanent’s step by step guide to NMC registration.
Moving countries is a very exciting venture, however, it can also be very daunting, with so much to organise. At HCL Permanent, we are here to help you through the various things you will need to ensure a smooth transition into becoming a nurse in the UK. One such necessity is registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Did you know that the NHS is the fourth largest employer in the world? And that there are 370,327 nurses working within the NHS? Not surprising then that the NMC was created to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the public by ensuring nurses keep their skills and knowledge up to date.
Registering with the NMC is your first step to working in the UK. To help you through registration, we have put together this quick step-by-step guide:
- To begin your registration, you simply need to apply for you application pack online, using this link – http://forms.nmc-uk.org/Forms/eurequest
- Having applied for your pack, you will need to put together the following documents:
- Certified copy of passport or ID card
- Marriage certificate or name change certificate (if required)
- Certified copy of Police clearance certificate (translated into English and dated within the last 3 months)
- Certified copy of Nursing Certificate / Diploma (translated into English, signed and dated)
- Nursing Council Declaration – Good health and character declaration (translated into English, signed and dated)
- An employment reference form (translated into English, signed and dated)
- Once you have all of the necessary documents, submit these with the application pack to the NMC. The NMC will charge £110 for an evaluation fee.
- Once you have sent the application pack and documents to the NMC, the documents are scanned into the system, and can take up to 90 days to process. Applications are processed in chronological order. If you fail to provide all the documents required, this could significantly influence the processing time.
- Once your application is approved, the NMC send a Letter of Declaration for you to sign and send back. They will then ask for payment either credit or debit card, or postal order with your recently updated information about change address(£100). N.B. They do not accept cash.
Once you have sent back your signed form and the NMC receive payment, they will send you your PIN (personal identification number) in the post, confirming that you are fully registered with the NMC. It can take 48 hours for the PIN to be issued. Your registration will then show up on the NMC register online. It may take 7-10 days for you to receive your PIN card and statement of entry in the post.
- When applying for registration please ensure all your applications forms are completed in full, and stamped and signed where appropriate.
- All stamps and signatures must be English and clearly visible
- Please ensure all signatures are identical
- All accompanying paperwork requested as part of the registration process must be certified copies of the original documents, including both the original language version and an English translation.
- The NMC accept documents that have been certified by any of the following:
- A legal practitioner (solicitor, lawyer), a notary public, the competent authority in your country of training, an official who is authorised to certify documents from an embassy or consulate, a police officer, a justice of the peace, the office of mayor (when authorised to do so), a member of the UK or Scottish parliament, or a member of the Welsh or Northern Ireland assemblies.
- Do not send original documents such as passports and certificates to the NMC, as we cannot return these to you.
